Steven Sanchez Joins the Board of the Independent Writers of Southern California

iwosc_bannerI’m humbled and grateful to have been asked to join the board of The Independent Writers of Southern California. IWOSC is a Los Angeles-based writers group I’ve been proud to be associated with for many years. Hundreds of Southern California writers meet in monthly chapter meetings, weekend workshops and evening topic panels. It’s a great mastermind delving into all things writing, from how to write in a particular genre, to the best ways to market and sell your work.

Great things happen when like-minded people get together. Groups like IWOSC help writers take their passion to the next level. We’ve had incredible speakers from the late Dan Poynter to writer/celebrities like Adrienne Barbeau. I’ve met fascinating people such as self-published authors trying to preserve some family history for future generations. There are also New York Times bestselling authors who are experienced navigating the brave new world of publishing. I’ve been inspired by some of the humblest people who are doing incredible things worldwide, and yet are willing to share what they know with others.

Popular Topics

I’ve moderated a few panels on marketing and taught several workshops myself as well. My favorite is the annual Marketing panel, which presents a variety of marketing and publicity experts discussing what works and what today. It seems every year we learn something new that you couldn’t do even last year. WordPress, Social Media, even screenwriting are also on the menu.

Writing is a solitary endeavor, but once the book is ready it takes a village…or at least a little help from your friends. Editing, publishing, promoting and networking your writing across the planet requires help. New social networks and new technologies are emerging annually. These open the world to writers for often no more than the time it takes to learn a new skill.  I usually open my events with the words, “there’s never been a better time to be a writer.”

A Great Year Ahead

There’s never been a better time to join a local writer’s group either. This promises to be a great year for IWOSC. As a board member, I’m privy to some of the events and personalities who will be presenting in upcoming months. I’ve never been more excited. Our two largest events, the annual Marketing panel and Agents’ panel, grow larger each year. Surprising new tips and techniques are revealed, even among the panelists. We’re also broaching challenging and controversial topics like ageism and sexism in the traditional publishing world. Even the experts are often spotted sitting in the audience.

I’m proud to be a writer and thrilled about the accessibility that the Internet and digital delivery provide to authors worldwide. If you’re trying to go it alone, I encourage you to find a local group of writers or start one. You’ll be amazed at what it will do for your writing.
